چکیده

background: caprine besnoitiosis is an economically important disease of goats. neospora caninum, another coccidian parasite of worldwide distribution, infects several animal species and is a major cause of abortion in cattle . combined infections of n. caninum and besnoitia caprae can occur in geo-graphical areas endemic for both species of parasite in goats. this experiment was conducted to in-vestigate the possible cross-immunity between these two infections in experimentally infected balb/c mice. methods: forty balb/c mice were divided into four equal groups. the mice of groups 1 and 4 were inoculated with 1×10 6 live virulent tachyzoites of n. caninum (nc-1), while animals of groups 2 and 3 were inoculated with sterile tissue culture medium. each mouse in groups 1 and 2 was chal-lenged 28 days later with 1×10 6 live virulent bradyzoites of b. caprae (bc-1). results: following the challenge, the mice in groups 1 and 2 showed 100% morbidity and 100% mortality within 9 days post infection, while all the animals of groups 3 and 4 remained alive. the dead animals were necropsied. the survivors (mice in group 3 and 4) were euthanized 9 days after inoculation and the gross and histopathological lesions in different organs were investigated. conclusion: immunization and challenge experiments with lethal dose of b. caprae in the highly sus-ceptible balb/c mice showed no cross-protection between n. caninum and b. caprae .

Evaluation of Cross Immunity and Histopathological Findings in Experimentally Infected BALB/c Mice with Neospora caninum and Besnoitia caprae

BACKGROUND Caprine besnoitiosis is an economically important disease of goats. Pathological and immunological findings of athymic nude and congenic wild type BALB/c mice experimentally infected with Neospora caninum.

Neospora is a cyst-forming coccidian parasite that causes abortions and neuromuscular disorders in a wide variety of mammals. Japanese bovine isolate JPA1 was inoculated intraperitoneally into BALB/c nu/ nu (athymic nude) and BALB/c (congenic wild type) female mice to examine the distribution of parasites and resistance mechanisms to Neospora infection. All the athymic nude mice died within 28 ...

Tissue distribution of Neospora caninum in experimentally infected cattle.

Histopathology and quantitative PCR (qPCR) were used to determine the tissue distribution of Neospora caninum in calves at 80 days postinfection. Our findings revealed that the most appropriate brain areas for researching N. caninum pathogenesis were the amygdala and hippocampus for qPCR and the corpus striatum and diencephalon for histopathology.

Buparvaquone is active against Neospora caninum in vitro and in experimentally infected mice

The naphthoquinone buparvaquone is currently the only drug used against theileriosis. Here, the effects of buparvaquone were investigated in vitro and in an experimental mouse model for Neospora caninum infection. In 4-day proliferation assays, buparvaquone efficiently inhibited N. caninum tachyzoite replication (IC50 = 4.9 nM; IC100 = 100 nM). However, in the long term tachyzoites adapted and ...

Transcriptome and Histopathological Changes in Mouse Brain Infected with Neospora caninum

Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite that causes neurological disorders in dogs and cattle. It can cause nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis and a variety of neuronal symptoms are observed, particularly in dogs. However, the pathogenic mechanism, including the relationship between the parasite distribution and the clinical signs, is unclear. In this study, to understand the pathogenic mechan...

Fetal death in cows experimentally infected with Neospora caninum at 110 days of gestation.

Neospora caninum is a major cause of abortion in cattle, but the reasons why some animals abort and not others remain unclear. Most of the N. caninum experimental primary infections in cattle late in gestation, after 120 days of pregnancy, result in birth of full-term congenitally infected fetuses. In the present study, the distribution of parasites and pathogenesis of infection in both dams an...
